Le Nouveau Noir

A friend of mine posted this song on my facebook wall not that long ago. Its the very talented Bon Iver and Bowerbirds covering Sarah Siskind’s “Lovin’s for fools”. Its absolutely beautiful. This in itself is complete irony really – such a beautiful melody and warm, soothing sound for such a cynical and sad lyric.

Though not quite word for word, I’ve been known to tout the phrase “Love is for fools” on many an occasion. I suppose that I say it for its very contradictory nature. See, dont tell anyone, but I’m a romantic at heart. And no, not in the traditional “flowers and chocolates” sense. More in the rose coloured glasses type way.

I like to see the beauty in people, places, thoughts, moments. I wear my heart on my sleeve: a lot. I breathe the energies around me, and get swept away in tides of beautiful rainbow-hued nonchalance: where everyone, everything, every person wants nothing but good will and fortune for themselves and each other. Its a beautiful thing, but not without its pains. The reality of life is that sometimes, some people just suck.

Think about it. People created politics, people created capitalism, people created greed, hate, envy, war. The list goes on. When we stop to think about it, it all starts getting a little grim and gloomy. No wonder a nu-wave romantic like me gets her heart broken a hundred times a day! But this always poses me the question – is it better to have loved and been screwed over by a fuckwit (my use of metaphors is quite crude tonight) or to have never loved at all? Which brings me to my answer and point:

If love is for fools, then you can call me the joker.
